surface

Surface is a photographic series shot on 35mm film, rooted in an art of noticing: a practice of presence that begins by slowing down and paying attention to what usually goes unseen.

The series focuses on fragments of the urban environment: marks, walls, tears, graffiti, weathered surfaces, and other traces that are often overlooked or dismissed as visually insignificant. Removed from their original context and presented at a larger scale, these details begin to evoke the visual language of material abstraction (“Matiérisme”) or abstract expressionism, blurring the boundary between street photography and abstract painting.

By isolating and reframing these surfaces, Surface invites a shift in perception. The work asks what makes something worthy of attention, and how aesthetic value is assigned: why can a gesture be read as art within a gallery, while a visually similar mark in the street passes unnoticed or is perceived as damage?

The series is conceived for large-scale presentation, intensifying the ambiguity between photography and painting. At this scale, the original subject recedes, allowing the viewer to encounter the image first through form, texture, rhythm, and presence.
